As a parent of a child with autism, it can be difficult both to find the right information and get access to support. Maybe you suspect a diagnosis or your child already has been diagnosed. Below is information about autism and what supports are available.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Diagnosis and assessment<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Autism is diagnosed if someone has such great difficulties with social interaction and communication that it becomes an obstacle in everyday life. The diagnosis means that it is difficult for the person to cope with their everyday life. Autism is sometimes called an autism spectrum disorder. To get a diagnosis, an assesment is made after, for example, parents or educators have noticed that the child is having difficulty. A first step towards getting an assesment is to contact the health center (V\u00e5rdcentral or BVC). The assesment can then be done by the child psychiatry (BUP)<\/a>, Habilitation services<\/a> or a pediatric clinic. You can search for your closest clinic at 1177<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Habilitation services support you and your child<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

If your child has difficulties with the autism spectrum, it is important to do two things. On the one hand, make accomodations so that the child copes better with their everyday life and on the other hand, help the child to develop new skills. There are ways to do this and if your child is diagnosed you are entitled to support from the Habilitation services<\/a>. The habilitation services can help by coaching you as parents and the preschool or school in strategies for accommodating and practicing skills with the child.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Autism diagnosis also entitles to support under the Act on Support and Service for Certain Disabled Persons (LSS). You cab read more about this (in Swedish) at Autism and the Asperger's Association<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your child's needs<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Effective interventions consist of adapting the environment and practicing important skills that the child needs to master. What the support looks like depends on what makes you and your child lead a better life. The more things the child has difficulty with, the more intensive interventions are needed. It has been shown that interventions work better the earlier they are given and the more time is spent on them. However, the most important thing about the interventions is that they focus on critical skills and that they are carried out with quality. Therefore, it is very important to get proper supervision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Targeted or multifaceted interventions<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

M\u00e5nga barn f\u00e5r enskilda insatser kring specifika sv\u00e5righeter, t.ex. en \u00f6vning i kommunikation om barnet beh\u00f6ver \u00f6va p\u00e5 det eller en insats f\u00f6r att minska problembeteenden om barnet skadar sig sj\u00e4lv eller andra. Om ditt barn har mycket sv\u00e5righeter r\u00e4cker det inte med insatser kring en sv\u00e5righet utan d\u00e5 beh\u00f6vs m\u00e5ngsidiga intensiva insatser. D\u00e5 jobbar hemmet och pedagoger med m\u00e5nga olika omr\u00e5den med st\u00f6d fr\u00e5n en handledare. Omr\u00e5dena \u00e4r ofta exempelvis kommunikation, samspel, vardagsf\u00e4rdigheter, motorik. Denna typ av insatser kallas olika saker, kanske kallar din habilitering insatserna f\u00f6r MIB, IBT, EIBI, MII eller TIBI. Alla dessa f\u00f6rkortningar betyder samma sak: tidiga m\u00e5ngsidiga beteendeinriktade insatser som bygger p\u00e5 ABA<\/a>. The purpose of intervention<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Insatser b\u00f6r alltid ha fokus p\u00e5 att \u00f6ka sj\u00e4lvst\u00e4ndighet och livskvalitet. Syftet med st\u00f6der \u00e4r att din barn ska m\u00e5 s\u00e5 bra som m\u00f6jligt och kunna g\u00f6ra s\u00e5 mycket som m\u00f6jligt i sitt liv. Det viktigaste \u00e4r ofta att l\u00e4ra barnet att kommunicera och olika s\u00e4tt att samspela. En viktig del i att bli s\u00e5 sj\u00e4lvst\u00e4ndig som m\u00f6jligt \u00e4r att kunna ber\u00e4tta vad man tycker och k\u00e4nner, vilket ofta \u00e4r sv\u00e5rt f\u00f6r barn med autism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prerequisites f\u00f6r intensiva insatser<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Det \u00e4r du som f\u00f6r\u00e4lder och f\u00f6rskolan som anpassar och \u00f6var med barnet med handledning fr\u00e5n habiliteringen. F\u00f6r att f\u00e5 till insatserna beh\u00f6ver f\u00f6rskolan ha en resursperson som har ansvar f\u00f6r just ditt barn. Ofta beh\u00f6ver f\u00f6rskolan g\u00f6ra en ans\u00f6kan till kommunen f\u00f6r att f\u00e5 extra pengar till det (deta brukar kallas till\u00e4ggsbelopp eller verksamhetsst\u00f6d). Habiliteringen brukar kr\u00e4va att f\u00f6rskola och f\u00f6r\u00e4ldrar totalt \u00f6var ett visst antal timmar i veckan (oftast mellan 15 och 30). Det kan l\u00e5ta mycket, men kom ih\u00e5g att det handlar om tid som viktiga vuxna \u00e4nd\u00e5 spenderar med barnet! \u00d6vningstid kan exempelvis best\u00e5 i att barnet f\u00e5r \u00f6va p\u00e5 att ta p\u00e5 sig kl\u00e4der n\u00e4r det \u00e4r dags att g\u00e5 ut, be om n\u00e5got i matsituationen och \u00f6va p\u00e5 att leka med andra barn. Kom \u00e4ven ih\u00e5g att det g\u00e5r att apply for financial support from the Swedish Social Insurance Agency (F\u00f6rs\u00e4kringskassan)<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you can't get support from the Habilitation Services<\/h4>\n\n\n\n
