The diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder is given to children who have great difficulty communicating and interacting. You can read more about this under the tab For parents to children with autism. The interventions for children with autism with the greatest research support are behavior analytical (ABA. CBA offers supervision to adults who want to offer their child accomodations and skills training. These can be both individual interventions for specific problems and entire programs for skills training with exercises in communication, interaction, language, motor skills and ADL. The supervision usually takes place with the child present and the supervisor showing how an exercise is done. Then the child's important adults practice with the child with feedback from the supervisor.
EIBI – interventions with many names
The interventions always focus on teaching the child skills, in this way the interventions can be seen as a special type of pedagogy. The interventions can be called different things: Early Intensive Behavioral Intervention (EIBI), Intensive Behavior Training (IBT). Sometimes the intervention is called a type of therapy, but that is misleading since ABA is about teaching, not therapy. The interventions are always based on the research field applied behavioral analysis.
The purpose of EIBI
The interventions should always focus on increasing independence and quality of life. The purpose of supports is for your child to feel as good as possible and be able to do as much as possible in their life. Often, the most important thing is to teach the child to communicate and different ways of interacting. An important part of becoming as independent as possible is to be able to express what you think and feel, which is often difficult for children with autism.
